Atkore’s Domestic and Environmental Certification Process

In the past, there has been some confusion regarding Atkore’s domestic and environmental certification process.

Certification plays an important role in the sales function as well as the compliance aspect of our business.  As an example, steel products manufactured and/or mined and melted here in the United States are often required by customers to meet federal or state requirements.  Industry Affairs provides these certifications to verify compliance with domestic regulations. The Buy American Act of 1933 and Buy America 49 U.S.C. are two of the major U.S. provisions that ensure federal and state transportation and military and government installation projects are built with American-made products.  These regulations are intended to ultimately guarantee infrastructure investments will support American companies.

From an environmental standpoint LEED, REACH, and ROHS certifications are often requested to ensure that products meet environmental standards (i.e. chemical content, ingredient make-up). LEED, also known as “Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design,” is a green-building certification program that recognizes building strategies and practices, and offers points as incentives for tax credibility on projects.  REACH, also known as “Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals,” is a European Regulation (No 1907/2006) concerning chemicals and their safe use. The focus of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment.  RoHS, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC, stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substances.” RoHS originated in the European Union (EU) and places restrictions on the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. RoHS is active in the entire electronics industry, as well as many electrical products.
